In case you haven’t picked up on it, plumbers like to have a good time, and that includes us at Hope Plumbing. Lighthearted bets aren’t uncommon around here, but last Friday Jack made a wager with technician Jonathan where everyone is a winner.

“I’ve been a smoker for going on 14 years and have always wanted to quit,” Jonathan says. “Last Friday, Jack and I were talking about [me smoking] and he asked me what it would take to get me to quit. Then he threw a couple of plans at me.”

One of those plans was to give Jonathan $1 extra per hour worked as long as he stayed smoke-free. Additionally, he’s decided to put this directly into his IRA. I Hope Plumbing match all IRA contributions. If he stays with the company for 20 years, he will earn an extra $40,000 and, if the money earns 5% interest, he will have saved about $100,000.

Jonathan has made it 5 days so far. While he knows people who have quit using Chantix, he’s decided to go cold turkey. “It’s one of the hardest things I’ve had to do,” he says with a laugh, but at the end of the day, he knows it’s what he needs to do.

We feel like it’s our responsibility to do what we can to help our employees make healthy decisions. If you happen to have Jonathan as your technician, make sure you congratulate him on all his hard work – and hit him up for some cash while you’re at it.
