You can pretty much guarantee that anytime you open up any of your social media accounts, you’re going to see someone doing the Ice Bucket Challenge. Everyone is doing it, from celebrities and grandparents to kids and pets, and even us!

If you didn’t already know, ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a terminal disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

The Ice Bucket Challenge that has been spreading all over the internet, on every social media network from Twitter to Facebook, from YouTube to Instagram, and more, has been responsible for raising more than $53 million in donations for the ALS Association, up from $2.2 million in the same period last year.

This is a lighthearted way to spread the word about a very serious disease. According to the ALS Association, Lou Gehrig’s Disease is a loss of muscle control. “Motor neurons reach the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles through the body… When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost.”

This is a serious cause of a disease with a very serious diagnosis, but the viral Ice Bucket Challenge is doing an exceptional job at spreading the word. The best part, we think, is that people are finding so many creative ways to participate.

We were so happy to join in! Of course, we had to do it up with the backhoe. It’s only natural to use the tools of the trade.

We encourage you to participate in the challenge, too, and be sure to donate what you can here!
